Sue was determined to wear an elegant hat to her daughter’s wedding. She could not find one on the high street which would fit her self-proclaimed “smaller-than-average” head. Sue enrolled in a three-day millinery course with Rose Cory, the late Queen Mother’s milliner. Making hats very quickly became a passion for her, and she signed up for further courses at Liverpool Community College and Leeds College of Art, all whilst maintaining her full-time role as a secretary.
In 2013, Sue graduated with distinctions and higher distinctions and set up her own business, Sue Wood Millinery, which she now runs from a studio in the back garden of her Wirral home. Since setting up her business, Sue Wood has worked on multiple big theatre productions including Disney’s The Lion King and she also receives regular commissions for wedding hats, mother of the bride hats, race day hats and other occasion hats.
Sue Wood Millinery’s favourite thing about making hats is seeing her clients smile when they put on their finished headpiece. They are often looking for hats for the most special events in their lives and playing a part in making them feel beautiful warms her heart. Sue Wood wants to help others love hats as much as she does. Traditional millinery skills have been passed on for hundreds of years by generations of skilful women and she works to ensure that their time, effort, creativity and innovation do not go to waste. And so the Wirral-based milliner now leads her own millinery workshops, teaching others how to make spectacular hats.
Sue Wood Millinery’s invitation to join London Hat Week 2018 came just weeks after she was nominated for a Northern Power Women award and shortlisted for two FSB Merseyside, West Cheshire and Wigan awards. Her hat, Oswaldtwistle, was also just one of thirty hats chosen internationally to feature at the Press Preview Day.
